Imagine what it would be like to work in an environment where there was no gossip!

No negative chitter chatter as you walk into the staff room. No wondering what people are saying about you or a good friend. You just focus on doing great work.

I know that gossip is an issue because of the thousands of people that I work with – whether it is as a speaker, as a coach or when I am doing training, people talk about this time and time again. That negativity zaps their energy, it zaps their productivity and sometimes it’s even what leads to people deciding, “I’m outta here, I can’t work in this environment anymore.”

What if those people are your top talent?

What if they are the peers you depend upon most, the top performers that bring in the revenue, the productivity and the customers?  It doesn’t need to be like this.  In fact, I feel so strongly that it doesn’t need to be like this, I want to give you a resource. You see, it comes down to one core strategy.  A strategy that you are already using, you just may not have already teamed it with your best strategy, to be able to deal with the negativity and the gossip in your workplace. The exercise is called, “resource gossip,” because we actually gossip for a good reason.  We gossip because it is social glue – so why don’t we bind each other with something that’s positive and helpful?

Sometimes people ask me, “What am I already doing then that’s working? How is this resource gossip so very easy, and yet, we have this pervasive problem with negativity?”

Well here’s some things you are already doing.

You are already talking about people behind their back and often you’re saying good things.  Here is the second thing that you do.  Sometimes you tell those people, who haven’t heard about the great things others are saying, you tell them, “this is what so and so said about you.”

Doesn’t it feel amazing . . .

. . . when somebody comes and tells you about what you are doing well, and how people are recognizing you?  Sometimes we can even build this into team meetings, and that’s that resource I want to give you because there is a way in which you can build this in with greater structure.

Who can you gossip about?  How about your boss? Of course your peers. Could you gossip about your suppliers?  In your personal life, what about your neighbours, your family, your friends?  The list goes on!
