EP3: What is the side hustle generation?

In this episode of the Greatness Together Podcast, we explore the societal, economic and personal implications of side hustle – good and bad – and why they’re not going anywhere anytime soon.

Side Hustles are Here to Stay

Whether turning a hobby into a small business, reselling some time and talent outside of work through Fiverr, or laying some tracks to one day go out on your own, side hustles are on the rise. And it turns out it’s good for everyone – students, employees, and even employers.

How can this be so? In this episode, we explore side hustles and how they make perfect sense at this time in history and society. Are you curious about what this looks like through the lens of Gen X and Gen Z?

Side Hustle Security

From our cross-generational perspective, we debrief some data about how side hustles are a great way to build security in the current (confusing and uncertain) state of the economy – inflation, interest rates, consumer debt, job vacancy (and job opening) rates – because hey, Simonne and her generation are wondering, “Will I ever be able to afford a house?” And Sarah and her generation are asking, “Don’t people need to afford a house, so why aren’t they staying in jobs longer?”

Side Hustle Benefits

Beyond the economics of side hustles, we chat about powerful human concepts, including meaning, achievement, and connection. (It is a psychology podcast, after all!)

And spoiler alert: when we say side hustle generation, we’re not talking about young workers. It’s everywhere, and in fact, it may have been you, and you didn’t even know it!

"I had the pleasure of seeing Sarah speak (and dance!) on stage at the Spark Conference. I loved her passion and message and asked if I could treat her to a beverage that evening. Sarah had dinner plans and was already pressed for time yet still made time to swing by my hotel room to connect for a few minutes. She gave me some great advice as I shared some of my career aspirations, one of them being speaking on stage! Thank you Sarah for sharing your passion with the world."

"It was a pleasure speaking with Sarah. I noticed her ability to communicate with people, with my wife and I walking away from her with a smile on our faces. To an expression I use often, "People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care." That is Sarah in a nutshell."

"I have had the Sarah experience in numerous settings: As a keynote, around a table with several other business owners, one on one over coffee, chatting with others at a conference reception, dining with a small group of colleagues. No matter the setting you always get the same Sarah: engaging, attentive, interested, inspiring, motivational, genuine. And always with an infectious smile. Do yourself, your company, your association a favour. Get the Greatness Magnified (Sarah) experience. The payback is priceless."
