Do you know what IS worth the energy? A good honest examination of the employee experience.
- Are you giving people a reason to stay?
- Are employees and leaders telling their friends, “you should work here?”
- Are we ensuring no one feels like a number?
We’re in the business of earning staff, not hiring them.
It’s the Age of the Employee Experience. (And good news, it’s no calories!)
If we have to fixate on anything, let’s make it the right thing: the solution, not the problem. The Great Resignation is a trend, not the cause.
Many staff and leaders had their bags mentally packed back when we knew Corona as a beer you had to serve with lime. Only 30% were satisfied (Gallup). Now that there are so many other options, they’re checking out the flight board of work destinations. Will they leave for a competitor? Will they leave the industry entirely? Will they opt-out of traditional work altogether?
Give them a reason to stay.
If you focus on the employee experience, you will find that there are a multitude of micro tweaks you can make to elevate the employee experience – from ‘pre-hire to retire’. It also allows you to see how employees’ needs are shifting. For example, WorkWell here in Canada found that employees’ needs have changed over the last year, with feeling appreciated not just a “want”; they’re clearly indicating it’s a need. (Check out the full report here.)
When you look at this list, and when you consider what would improve the employee experience as a whole, it’s clear that recognition is the single easiest, fastest, most accessible, and deliciously spreadable way to elevate it. To attract and retain great people, more and more, they’re saying they need to feel valued. Even in your industry, where there is mass dissatisfaction, a supervisor or manager can make a huge difference in ensuring their staff feel valued even if they feel the system is letting them down.
Help staff unpack their bags. Recognize, appreciate and value them into staying – on your team, with your organization, and in their field. The stakes are high my friends. It’s about keeping great people from leaving not just your organization but ditching their entire training, experience, and career for a fresh start. It’s that serious. So, isn’t it that exciting when recognition could very well be the thing that you can do in this stormy sea of stress and strain at work?
