Give Them a Reason to Stay

image of Sarah McVanel with inspiring quote Focus on earning staff, not hiring them. Give them a reason to stayTo talk about not having enough staff without exploring a solution is like wishing we didn’t have to pay taxes or that ice cream didn’t have calories. It gets us nowhere.

Do you know what IS worth the energy? A good honest examination of the employee experience.

  • Are you giving people a reason to stay?
  • Are employees and leaders telling their friends, “you should work here?”
  • Are we ensuring no one feels like a number?

We’re in the business of earning staff, not hiring them.

It’s the Age of the Employee Experience. (And good news, it’s no calories!)

If we have to fixate on anything, let’s make it the right thing: the solution, not the problem. The Great Resignation is a trend, not the cause.

Many staff and leaders had their bags mentally packed back when we knew Corona as a beer you had to serve with lime. Only 30% were satisfied (Gallup). Now that there are so many other options, they’re checking out the flight board of work destinations. Will they leave for a competitor? Will they leave the industry entirely? Will they opt-out of traditional work altogether?

Give them a reason to stay.

Results of WorkWell Poll of how employees needs have changed during COVIDIf you focus on the employee experience, you will find that there are a multitude of micro tweaks you can make to elevate the employee experience – from ‘pre-hire to retire’. It also allows you to see how employees’ needs are shifting. For example, WorkWell here in Canada found that employees’ needs have changed over the last year, with feeling appreciated not just a “want”; they’re clearly indicating it’s a need. (Check out the full report here.)

When you look at this list, and when you consider what would improve the employee experience as a whole, it’s clear that recognition is the single easiest, fastest, most accessible, and deliciously spreadable way to elevate it. To attract and retain great people, more and more, they’re saying they need to feel valued. Even in your industry, where there is mass dissatisfaction, a supervisor or manager can make a huge difference in ensuring their staff feel valued even if they feel the system is letting them down.

Help staff unpack their bags. Recognize, appreciate and value them into staying – on your team, with your organization, and in their field. The stakes are high my friends. It’s about keeping great people from leaving not just your organization but ditching their entire training, experience, and career for a fresh start. It’s that serious. So, isn’t it that exciting when recognition could very well be the thing that you can do in this stormy sea of stress and strain at work?

Deb Rakonjac

Organizational Development, Purolator Inc.

"Sarah nailed it!  She worked with the planning group to learn about the organization, the audience, the desired key messages and integrated it seamlessly into her keynote. Her energy was contagious! We received rave reviews of this portion of our event and Sarah was able to speak to all members of our organization in a way that motivated them to recognize others everyday. Our executives were extraordinarily pleased and integrated FROGging into their recent board meeting. Purolator is grateful to Sarah for dropping the pebble and we continue to see the ripples from this session across the organization. Working with Tami was phenomenal and the supports were easy to integrate to ensure the session went well. Thanks to you both!!"

President & CEO, Swiftco Inc.

"I have had the Sarah experience in numerous settings: As a keynote, around a table with several other business owners, one on one over coffee, chatting with others at a conference reception, dining with a small group of colleagues. No matter the setting you always get the same Sarah: engaging, attentive, interested, inspiring, motivational, genuine. And always with an infectious smile. Do yourself, your company, your association a favour. Get the Greatness Magnified (Sarah) experience. The payback is priceless."

"Funny, full of energy and incredibly motivating – all words to use when describing Sarah and her passionate stage presence. We were fortunate to have Sarah join us as a speaker for Spark Women’s Leadership Conferences and her presentations about leveraging greatness hit the core of our objective at SPARK: “A rising tide lifts all boats”. I would not hesitate to recommend Sarah to other organizations that are searching for a well-prepared, well-organized, thoughtful and passionate storyteller."

I am grateful for how you have helped us this year to transform our in-person staff recognition events into virtual and on-location events. Our staff feel more inspired, appreciated and motivated after they hear you speak, and I know our amazing in-house team here looks forward to designing engaging appreciation events with your support."
